This Gives Me Heartburn
This is what happens when [tag]user-generated content[/tag] meets desperate [tag]indie rock[/tag] bands meets [tag]corporate America[/tag]. I can see where, on paper, this seemed like a good idea to somebody. I can even see where a band or artist might look at the contest and say, “wow, this is my chance!!!”
All I can say, from a marketing standpoint, is that this will do nothing to bring back the “[tag]plop plop fizz fizz[/tag]™” jingle in the minds of American consumers.
And, from a musician standpoint, what the hell were you bands and artists thinking?
(The video itself is behind the cut here, until I get a C&D that is.)
(…and here it is. Um, enjoy?)
I mean seriously. Did you really think that appearing in a freeking [tag]Alka Seltzer[/tag]™ commercial would offer any kind of legitimacy? Were you expecting your PPFF number to become a hit single? Did you think people would see a crowd of “fans” on TV waving glowing cups of Alka Seltzer™ (I’m not making this up) and think anything except “[tag]assclowns[/tag]“?
Now, granted, this is coming from the guy who brought Life Is [tag]Ikea[/tag] into the world. But the [tag]WTF[/tag] comes not from the creation of the song- more power to them, in fact, for resurrecting something that old into something relatively modern. But to be filmed as though you would passionately open your sold-out DVD-filming concert with “Plop Plop Fizz Fizz” is to indelibly stamp your band’s image with one label: [tag]whores[/tag].
I need an antacid now.
Update: Oh, and here’s the real kicker- scour that PPFF website if you want, you will not find a single link to this poor guy’s website ANYWHERE. Not one.
