Auditioning for the Nightmare

In a couple of weeks I’m going to offer myself up for public (very public) scrutiny on a major network TV show. A lot of people keep telling me I need to audition for American Idol… well, Idol is a show for singers. I’m more than that, I’m an entertainer. I’m a piano player. I’m a space pirate captain. I want to try my luck on a show that’s more about the entertainment than the voice.

So on March 7, 2009, I’ll be lining up with 20 gazillion other people in Boston to try for a slot on the next season of America’s Got Talent. The auditioning starts at 8am (GAH!) and, when all is said and done, the winner of the show takes home a million dollars and gets a show in Vegas. I’ve never been really good at auditioning for these kinds of things, so I will need all the prayers and support you can offer.

Right now I have to figure out which cover tune I can play for y 90-second initial audition that will really show off my talent.

    AWESOME! I really hope this goes well for you. In my opinion, they’re stupid if they don’t put you on the show. Heck, I would actually want to watch it if you’re on there. ;)

    They actually held the auditions for the show at a hotel in Nashville I was working at last time around. Getting into work was insane through all the people winding around the block.

    Hmmm. . .covers. . . I love “Landed”, but maybe “Walking in Memphis showcases you better.

    For some reason I’m stuck on you singing New York State of Mind. Whatever you pick really needs to have a wide range in 90 secs and you need to rehearse like crazy.

    You are way, way too good for that sort of show. :) You’re an awesome performer and an amazing songwriter. Best wishes with it anyway, even if they totally do not deserve you.

    Here’s a thought… next Tuesday, on your regular online gig, ask the fans to pick from your best three cover songs, and then play them for the fans on the show. BUT… only play the 90 second version that you will do at the audition.

    Also, reserve the right to override the fans, because they may not understand the need to stay in your range, etc. Choosing a limited list for them to choose from will lessen this risk, though.
