Using My Tunes

Blog

I’d like to share with you my thoughts on using my tunes. You see, a lot of you want to make videos or podcasts with Matthew Ebel tunes in the background. People like Chris Penn (Space Ninja) and Mark Blevis (Canadian) have already done so since I released the new album at PodCamp.

Here’s my dilemma, though. I want to support brave new media producers like these, yet at the same time I don’t want to give away the whole album within a week of releasing it. So far the only tune I’ve marked as “Podsafe” is Lost My Way. I’ve given special permission to one or two people to play other tunes from the album, but that’s it, really.

You see, an album release has to be done carefully in order to maximize the amount of attention without stifling people’s creativity and excitement. So I release one or two singles at a time just as though I were sending them to radio stations. Otherwise, people can just go listen to the whole album via videos and podcasts.

So if you’d like to use my tunes in your project or blog, ask me. I’m not hard to find, really, there’s a big Contact button on my website. If the tune you want isn’t in my podsafe list, just ask first. I may have big plans for that song already, but your idea may be better!

UPDATE: Bear in mind, I’m talking about recorded, album-based music here. My live bootleg policy has always been spread that stuff around!!! If you tape me at a live show and you know I’m not trying to make a live release out of it, share it!

I really appreciate it, folks, and thanks again for supporting the music!

  • The problem is that even if someone doesn't like your whole album, there is at least one tune that will appeal to every individual. Your latest album is full of great stuff!!! Perhaps you need to take your music down a notch..... NAHHH!!!!!

...looking forward to some Canadian appearances.

Aha! So I can finally get your second album! It's about time!

I'm undecided about what to put in the "autograph to" column. So you get to pick whether to use my real name or my furry name. =^_^=

    Have the best

  • THANK YOU for speaking out about this. I've had several talks with people about this same topic. I never stopped by and got the new CD when I was at Boston, but through these other projects, I've heard many of the tunes on the new album already. As much as I love your music Matt, I agree. It's not a cool thing that so much of it is already "out".

Also, some podcasters seem to believe that if music is labeled "Podsafe" that they, as podcasters, can use the music however they wish (such as streaming them at a party in SL). The license at the Podsafe Music Network is NOT a Creative Commons license. You're a BMI artist, you need to be compensated for use of your music in its other forms.
