Lynette-

That reminds me of something I realized many years ago. Halfway between Spokane, WA and Seattle is a town named Ellensburg. There are so many cows in that little town, most of us on high school and college choir tours called it "Smellensburg". The richest McDonald's in the state is in that town because EVERY choir, band, football, and touring bus stops at the fast food joints there for lunch.

And all I could think while eating a quarter pounder was that there are half a million cows in that town, but McDonald's probably ships it's "beef" in from another time zone.

What a great post! I live in the middle of a bunch of 'pick your own' family owned farms and believe it or not, they usually sell produce nearly year-round.

Something else my husband and I try to do is frequent LOCAL restaurants, not chains. Chains tend to ship their food from central locations while a good deal of local eateries buy locally-grown food. Plus, you can get to know the staff and owners of a local haunt, and chances are your dollars stay a bit closer to the community.
