We Have a Bright Future

Blog

We as Americans face difficult economic years ahead. So what?

Once upon a time a young prince named JFK proposed a voyage to the moon. No one knew how we would get there. Throughout the voyage we endured a money- and life-draining foreign war, a faltering economy, constant saber-rattling with Russia, and the assassination of three of our most inspiring leaders. With the exception of the latter, we’re in the same boat now as we were in the 1960’s.

So there we were- broke, bleeding, and bound for the moon. Because of our ability to focus on a unified vision, we somehow survived. We shot, landed, and brought back souvenirs from the moon like Velcro, advanced food preservation, advanced electronics, a new understanding of of our universe, microwave ovens, and mylar. Oh, and some rocks.

We created hundreds of thousands of American jobs and created new industries. We invented technologies that spread to the rest of the world. These jobs and technologies didn’t necessarily put men on the moon either, they made models. They assembled lunch boxes and action figures. They marketed the image of the astronaut as a rock star comparable to the Beatles (who also broke up during this period).

We have a bright future ahead of us. It may not be a voyage to the moon, but as Barack Obama has suggested, it may be a voyage to energy independence. Imagine the jobs, technologies, and prestige we can build with American hands if we commit ourselves to clean power.

    Fair nuff... thanks!

Two simple reasons: I want to drive traffic HERE to my website since I'm not selling my albums through LJ, and I'd rather just check ONE message board than have to check several. I want my visitors showing up here more than on LJ. :)

I'm really curious why you don't allow comments over at LiveJournal... ?
  • In talking with my dad the other day. He mentioned that in tight times, big government contracts usually happen to stimulate the economy. This energy independence may be the thing we need. We need a historic project of some sort to bring hope back.

If you think about about it. Hoover Dam was build around the time of a depression and as Matthew said, the space program was built around the time of another depression.

I think that you hit something on the head here.

Being an American has been pretty easy, lately. You just sit and get fat. That's what being an American has meant. We've not had any fight to us to do anything. Sure, there's Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Terrorism, but Americans by and large are just tired of that and so they ignore it for the "fearmongering" it is.

We need a new mission, a new focus, a new goal.

I hope Obama, for all his Kennedy like comparisons, gets up there on the stage after being elected, and pulls a Kennedy like line.

I hope he says "We will be using 100% alternative energy by the end of the next decade." Can you imagine that? Holy crap. It'd bond the nation like nothing else.

Hope things are going well with you.
  • I REALLY hope that this is a focus of America moving forward. We need to focus on it and figure out what is going to work and what isn't.

I was a bit bummed that both candidates dodged the question of which approach they thought was better. Either a Manhattan Project approach or a series of a thousand garages like Silicon Valley. I thought it was an amazing question and neither took the opportunity to answer it.

I agree with you fully though. We WILL pull through this.
