So You Want To Host A House Concert

Matthew Ebel Singing So you’d like to host a house concert, huh? Fantastic! I’d love to set up a show in your living room or backyard! It’s really quite simple, just like inviting friends over for a football game. Only I’m the game, and there’s no score to bet on. Just take a look at this info here and make sure this sounds like something you can handle…

What’s Required:

  1. A large enough room for a 6′ square performance area and at least a dozen people, preferably more like 20 or 30.
Even if the show’s planned to be outside, the weather may change those plans.

  2. Seating for that many people.
Folding chairs are easy to borrow from churches, schools, neighbors, etc.

  3. 1 Grounded power outlet with enough amperage to power a stereo system.
If your washing machine is on the circuit, it’s strong enough. Just don’t run the washer during the show!
  4. Optional Bonus: High-speed Internet
This is so we can UStream the event… not a necessity, but would be really cool!
  5. A spare bed or couch to crash on for the night (if the show’s more than 100 miles from Boston).
  6. If I’m flying instead of driving, I’ll need a digital piano (you can probably borrow one from a friend/church/etc. or I can rent one if necessary).
All it needs are 88 weighted keys (like a real piano), 2 pedal inputs (sustain/switch pedals), and a MIDI Out port. Most digital pianos made in the last 10 years will have all that covered.

Donations:

  • There will be a suggested donation of $10 per person.

  • We won’t be selling tickets, but I may pre-sell CD’s to some people online. We’ll make sure we don’t overfill your house!
  • You or someone will pass around the donation bucket/bin/hat/whatever between sets. Or you can direct people to the donation bucket on the way in.
  • Food, Etc.

    • Provisions are up to you… it could be anything from just chips and salsa to a full pre-concert dinner, it’s at your discretion. Some snacks and drinks are always a good idea, though.
    • Alcoholic drinks are at your discretion. I only drink water or tea during my shows, but anything you want to provide for the guests is fine, whether it’s a full bar or a dry campus.
