There Is No New Media Community

Once upon a time in 2004 there was a new media community- back then we called them Podcasters. They were passionate, excitable, and ready to jump on any new opportunity they could create for themselves. Podcasters flew from all over the world to hang out at conventions they organized. For three years, New Media brought people together. Friendships were forged, business ventures launched, and through it all some amazing creations made their way onto the internet. The New Media community felt like a family.

Now it’s gone; the community has dissipated. And that’s okay.

Seriously, it’s okay. It took me a while to realize it, but disappearance of community is just the next major step towards permanence. Sure, it was sad to see some exciting projects lose steam or dissolve entirely, but it’s just the way of things. From the toils of early adopters and pioneers come both fruit and chaff. Once the spring season for New Media ended, it was time to tend the plants. That’s when I began to lament the disappearance of the New Media Community.

Eventful = Good

I just got a couple of emails… one from the Eventful.com staff (posted here) and one from the guy who recommended Eventful to me in the first place, Jonathan Coulton:

Hey Matthew,

Very surprised to hear that, I’ve never heard any complaints from my fans, and I know they’re generally very careful about being spammy. Are you sure that’s happening, and have you contacted eventful about it? I’ve found them to be very helpful in the past.

If you’re getting emails from Eventful.com that you don’t want, I’d suggest checking the unsubscribe links and reading carefully. I can’t find any evidence that they’re spammy. In fact, they seem to be fairly reputable as far as online services go.

Sure, they want to send you mail, but I can confirm that they do indeed let you opt-out once you’ve created an account. If you still have any problems, though, please let me know!

No Gig Tonight

Just got an email from the owner of Unums in Nashua… Due to the impending apocalypse in the form of Massive Snow Dump™, I’m not playing up in New Hampshire tonight. Instead, there will be a private show in my house involving a fireplace, a DVD, hot cocoa and Bailey’s, and a loved one. Sorry folks!
